The Navy League building in Elliot Lake is getting a new roof. League spokesman Tom Turner says the roof leaked for five years and the water caused $10,000 damage to clothing and equipment. Councillor Tammy VanRoon says the city owns the building and its neglect has created the existing circumstances.
Vanroon says it’s clear what the city has to do and that’s install a new roof and replace the drywall. However, that’s not how councillor Connie Nykyforak sees it, who along with Candace Martin were the only two councillors opposed to a new roof. Nykyforak believes the roof is the least of the building’s problems citing there’s mould at the site.
She doesn’t want money spent on the roof only to later find out the entire building has to be replaced. Officicals are aware of the mould and Turner pointed out the cadets have not used the interior of the building for the last two years. The final vote to replace the roof was 5-2 in favour.
