Gore Bay’s major long-term care facility project is on track.
According to the release, the work on the new St. Joseph’s Lodge of 64 bed facility is well underway. The substantial completion of the building is on track for the fall of 2027. Afterwards, furniture installation and final touches will take place. Due to rigorous inspections required by the Ministry of Long-Term Care, it will take a little longer before residents can begin moving into their new home. It’s estimated that the process will begin in December of 2027. St. Joseph’s priority is to ensure a smooth and safe transition for residents so that they can enjoy their new home.
The overall cost of the project is estimated at $49 million. Last fall, the province announced an investment of $30 million.
The project is on track through our fundraising efforts, the extraordinary gift from the Douglas A Smith Family Foundation and Manitoulin Group of Companies, a $2.57 million gift from the FDC Foundation, and another $200,000 gift from BMO. Other community partners who have supported the project include the Town of Gore Bay, MLA Law, the United Church Women of Silver Water, and the Municipality of Gordon/Barrie Island. St. Joseph’s Foundation welcomes any additional support from the community to help us realize this vision of creating a beautiful home, connected to nature that meets the needs of mind, body and spirit of its residents.
Designed with several residential wings, the four-extensions will provide living quarters for residents hailing from Manitoulin Island and the North Shore.
The central area will house administration and common areas including kitchen facilities, entertainment and common rooms, and treatment spaces and more.
The project is expected to be completed by late 2027 with possible occupancy by December of next year if all goes well with construction and legislated requirements.
