The director of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says an East Algoma OPP officer will not be charged following the death of a man late last year.
Director Joseph Martino says an OPP officer will not be charged following the custodial death of a 46-year-old man who suffered acute medical distress.
He says the cause of the man’s death was due to complications of cocaine toxicity and hypertensive heart disease.
Martino adds he found no reasonable grounds to believe an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the death of the man.
On October 27th, 2024, the man lapsed into acute medical distress while in the custody of the OPP and was pronounced deceased later that day.
