Fire danger still high – total fire ban remains in place

Although there is rain in our area, the fire danger has not been lessened.

Sudbury 17, the large wildfire about 35 kilometres north east of Elliot Lake continues to burn and there are several smaller ones between the city and Sudbury.

There is currently no need for an evacuation. Members of the public will be notified immediately if this changes.
Fire Chief John Thomas is in constant contact with the Ministry of Natural Resources whose crews are actively working on the fire.

The total fire ban remains in place throughout Northern Ontario.

Still with fires, A P-H-D student at MacMaster University in Hamilton is raising the alarm about the harm discarded cigarette butts can cause.

Kyra Simone says cigarette butts should be locked in a metal container with a lid to prevent them from reigniting.

She says the risk of butts starting a fire is high, but her research shows the after-effects of the fires are harmful, too.

She is part of a volunteer, Canada-wide “Butt Blitz” with non-profit “A Greener Future” which brings volunteers together to pick up littered cigarette butts.

Given the dry conditions most of Ontario is dealing with, Simone says it is important people take steps to prevent more fires from starting.
