Sherwood Park to be Renamed “W.P. Foster Park” in Espanola

Espanola Council unanimously approved an application submitted by the Espanola Lions Club and family members to rename Sherwood Park as “W.P. Foster Park” in honour of the late William (Bill) Foster.

Lion president Denis Shepitka told council Foster was not only a Lion, but an active volunteer and politician.

He adds Foster sat on many committees, regionally, provincially, and federally.

It was noted Foster’s influence was integral in negotiations with Huron Central Railway to maintain service to Espanola and the Domtar Mill.

His widow, Patricia, and daughters, also submitted letters to council for consideration. She stated: I was deeply moved by the phone call from Dennis Shepitka that the Lions Club was seeking to have the Town of Espanola rename Sherwood Playground on Barber Street after my husband, Bill Foster. I fully support their desire to do so, and would consider it a great honour if Council would approve their application.
Our daughters often played at Sherwood Playground when they were children. Now, they
have children of their own. Our 5 grandchildren, aged between 7 and 3 years old, would
greatly enjoy playing there now, when they come to visit “Gramma”. This renaming would
take on a special significance for them in keeping “Grandpa’s” memory alive.
The name that came to my mind was “Foster Park”, with perhaps a bench with his full name, “William  P. Foster” inscribed on it.
Now that council has approved the application, new signage will be approved.

An official dedication will be held in the Spring and a bench in his honour may also be installed at the park.

Foster passed away on June 28th of last year.

He was 73.
