Province offers to rescind notwithstanding clause but CUPE must end education worker’s strike

The Ontario government is willing to take the notwithstanding clause off the table with the union representing striking education workers.

Premier Doug Ford made the offer to the Canadian Union of Public Employees Monday morning.

Ford says they will rescind Section 33 of the Keeping Students in Class Act which legislates a four-year contract and prohibits the union’s right to strike and any further wage negotiations for the life of the contract.

Ford says CUPE must agree to stop their strike in exchange. Ford says his intention has always been and remains to negotiate with the union in good faith.

CUPE is expected to hold a media briefing at 11:00 Monday morning.

More to come…
