Art Scholarship Fund being established in memory Dr. Blake Randolph Debassige

The memory of an internationally recognized artist from Manitoulin Island will be honoured through the establishment of an Art Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Blake Debassige of M’Chigeeng First Nation died on June 13th.

Not only was he an Ojibwe Elder, he was also recognized internationally as an artist of the Woodland School.

Co-owner of Kasheese Studios Art Gallery with his wife Shirley Cheechoo he started painting when he was 16 and his art is now found in museums and galleries around the globe including the Canadian Museum of Civilization and McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

He was also one of the founders of the Debajehmujig Theatre Group and Weengushk Film Institute.

The Institute is establishing the fund in his name with a formal dedication planned in the future.

He was 65.
