An Espanola councillor’s seat has been declared vacant following a court decision.
That’s according to the town of Espanola, who says Thursday, an Ontario court ruled that Maureen Van Alstine contravened section 5 of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.
The town’s release states she has been reprimanded and her seat on council has been declared vacant.
The release says the ruling stems from an application submitted to the court by Espanola’s Integrity Commissioner Robert Swayze as it relates to violations of the Act by Van Alstine.
Espanola Town Clerk Joseph Burke says the council will be deliberating on the preferred process for filling the vacancy at its next regular meeting.
