Elliot Lake hub concept dead, pool can be repaired, new arena plans

Elliot Lake council got some good news finding out that the pool can be repaired which means millions in savings.

City CAO Daniel Gagnon says staff and council were pleasantly surprised.

Council passed two motions to move ahead with the repairs and to apply for grant funding to offset the costs of repairs and upgrades, estimated at around $3 million, substantially less than the $10 million plus for a new build.

With the removal of the pool from the community hub concept, council passed another motion to pursue building just a new arena with traditional design construction but without additional hub amenities such as an indoor track.

Mayor Dan Marchisella and staffers met with ministers yesterday to talk about both projects and to ask for funding supports.

They are expected to report back to council later this month.
