Reconciliation Walk for Sagamok and Massey communities

A joint community walk will be held this week to unite two communities in reconciliation.

Co-organizer Jayson Stewart says the Walk for Reconciliation is for the communities of Sagamok and Massey is being held to help people learn the truth about the history and ongoing impacts of the Indian residential school system.

Officials say the event is also in reaction to the release of videos on social media showing a male youth from Massey drinking and dancing to a drum song with a Every Child Matters flag wrapped around their body while others around him laughed and cheered him on.

Manitoulin OPP says it is now investigating the videos to see if there is a basis for racist-related charges to be laid.

Stewart stresses he knows racism exists in the community and the peaceful healing walk is an effort to unite the two communities in the common cause of eliminating that racism.

He says the walk will begin at 3:30 pm this Friday. https://www.facebook.com/events/1387573288379403/?
