Huron Shores changes composition of council

The Municipality of Huron Shores has passed a bylaw to reduce the number of councillors.

Clerk Administrator Deborah Tonelli says council has agreed to reduce the total number of councillors from eight to six as part of preparing for this year’s municipal election.

She adds since the municipality is set up as wards, this means one councillor is to be elected in each of the four wards, with an additional councillor to be elected from Wards 1 and 2 and the final sixth to be elected from Wards 3 and 4.

Tonelli says the mayor would be elected at large.

Council has deliberated the size of council several times since the 1999 amalgamation she explains, including a petition signed by seven percent of the electors in 2013 recommending the reduction.

The municipal election is slated to take place Monday, October 24th when the public will also vote for school board trustees.
