Elliot Lake councillor wants IC to withdraw appeal

Elliot Lake council wants the Integrity Commissioner to withdraw its appeal of a judge’s finding in a case involving a councillor.

Councillor Ed Pearce was brought before the court for a breach of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act when he failed to declare he was a director of the non-profit business development organization ELNOS while he sat on council, during a discussion relating to the organization.

The judge reprimanded him and applied a reprimand, but the Integrity Commissioner, E4M of Sault Ste. Marie, is appealing the judge’s decision.

Councillor Chris Patrie is putting a motion before council tonight asking E4M to withdraw the appeal, since it could be extremely expensive with taxpayers footing the bill.

Under their mandate, E4M can push for the appeal without the support of council.

The meeting will be livestreamed at www.elliotlake.ca.
