Fellowship set up to honour Elliot Lake lawyer’s contributions to LGBT legal recognition.

An Elliot Lake lawyer has received some surprising news.

University of Toronto alumnus R. Douglas Elliott, who served as lead counsel in the LGBT Purge class action that resulted in a landmark global settlement known as the LGBT Purge Fund, has been recognized with a fellowship in his name.

The R. Douglas Elliott Fellowship at the Faculty of Law will fund a JD or graduate student’s work with public interest-oriented LGBTQ+ organizations, or research on anti-discrimination class actions that reference the LGBT Purge.

Elliott says he was surprised and humbled.

Elliot adds the fund assists members of the armed forces, RCMP and federal employees, while the fellowship will support the next generation of human rights advocates.
