Unique ship history on display on Manitoulin Island

A Manitoulin Island museum will have the artifacts from a unique shipwreck on display well into next year.

Curator of the Old Mill Heritage Centre in Kagawong, Rick Nelson, says their doors are open following COVID-19 protocols with the focus being the Empress of Ireland.

He says the R. M. S. Empress of Ireland was an ocean liner that sank near the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River following a collision in thick fog with the Norwegian collier Storstad in the early hours of May 29th, 1914.

He adds with 1,012 people of the 1,477 aboard perishing in the collision, it is known as Canada’s own Titanic disaster.

Nelson says items on display include a large model of the ship, newspaper accounts, portholes, a wheelbase that was used to support the steering wheel for the ship, photographs, detailed blueprints and uncorked bottles of wine and beer recovered from the wreck.
