Late Central Manitoulin fire chief to be honoured

Firefighters across the North Channel corridor and Manitoulin Island are paying tribute to a long-time fire chief who passed away.

Central Manitoulin Fire Chief John Reid passed away suddenly last Thursday.

Born and raised on the Island, Reid had over 30 years experience as a volunteer firefighter and was appointed chief in February of 2005 where he managed four fire halls and over 35 volunteers.

He was known for his strong work ethic and was instrumental in seeing the completion of the Mindemoya Fire Hall in 2018 and the purchase of a new fire truck that just arrived in June.

A memorial service will take place at the Providence Bay Arena (5143 Hwy 551, Providence Bay) this Saturday from 2 pm to 3:30 pm followed by a Memorial Parade attended by firefighters from across the region to the Grimesthorpe Cemetery.
While everyone can attend the memorial service and parade only family members will be permitted to attend the graveside interment with COVID-19 protocols in place.
