Hiker located thanks to OPP app and GPS

An injured person was found in Killarney Park thanks to a smartphone app and GPS.

Constable Robert Lewis says last Thursday, an injured person activated a spot locater beacon which helps police and park wardens coordinate their location.

Lewis says the person was found suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion.

They were not able to walk so a stretcher was used by wardens and nine backcountry hikers to carry him out safely to a waiting Ornge air ambulance and hospital where he was treated and released.

Lewis using the “what3words” App is offered for free download for both android and apple devices and labels every three squared metres with a unique three-word location string which can be converted into latitude and longitude coordinates to find someone.

He says the communicator can send a link to the caller’s cell phone which will enable the caller to find their ‘what3words’ location.
