A look at the numbers

Public Health Algoma is reporting case #43 in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

The agency states it is due to exposure and the individual is self-isolating.

And, the provincial government will be spending another 116-million dollars to create more than 700 new hospital beds in 32 facilities.

Premier Doug Ford says it’s an effort to improve the capacity of health care institutions as the second wave of COVID-19 infections surges across Ontario.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says the move will also allow for the treatment of flu patients, and for the surgeries that were postponed last Spring.

There were 827 new coronavirus cases reported in the province yesterday.

More worrying is the fact that the proportion of tests coming back positive has risen to almost 3.5 percent.

Canada reaches a sad milestone – 10,000 deaths and counting

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canadians must be prepared for a tough winter ahead, as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to surge in many parts of the country.

Trudeau says, unless we’re very careful, the kinds of gatherings we usually have at Christmas won’t be happening.

Canada has crossed the ten-thousand mark in the number of deaths from the coronavirus, something he calls a national tragedy.

Sixty percent of the virus fatalities have occurred in Quebec, 30 percent in Ontario.

Fitness clubs push for staying open

The largest chain of fitness clubs in Canada is urging its members to write letters to provincial officials, to allow the facilities to reopen.

In an email to members, GoodLife Fitness wants members to write Premier Doug Ford and the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Doctor David Williams, urging that current restrictions be lifted in the four provincial hotspots, and that future closures be prevented.

The Fitness Industry Council of Canada, which is leading the campaign, says people are suffering negative impacts by not having access to exercise facilities.

It calls the services the industry offers vital.
