Two new cases of COVID-19 in Sudbury District

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reporting Case #97 and #98 in their service area.

According to the release, both cases are in the Greater Sudbury area, but the agency no longer identifies cases by gender or age.

Both cases are considered contact of a case with unknown exposure.

Both are in self-isolation.

A look at the numbers

Premier Doug Ford is warning that some regions may see rollbacks in the provincial reopening plan, after a large increase in COVID-19 cases.

There were 313 new diagnoses reported yesterday, the highest daily count since June 7th.

The majority of new cases were in the Greater Toronto and Ottawa areas.

Ford says the majority of people are following public health protocols but adds it only takes a small group to violate the rules, and the virus spreads like wildfire.

The premier notes social gatherings are the biggest source of new infections and they have to stop.

He says all options are still on the table including a return to Stage Two restrictions in areas where the number of cases continues to increase.

Coronavirus and the flu

Health Minister Christine Elliott says a plan to deal with the double threat of the coronavirus and the seasonal flu will be announced soon.

Elliott says this will be a much more complicated situation to deal with.

The plan will include the largest flu vaccination program in Ontario’s history.

There will also be funding to increase hospital capacity, to catch up on the backlog of surgeries, and to strengthen the protection of long-term care homes.

NDP leader Andrea Horwath says such a plan should have been ready weeks ago.
