Whitefish author releases a new book

A popular First Nation writer has compiled the stories of 17 other Indigenous authors into a new book.

Established Whitefish author, Darlene Naponse, says she put the call out for stories and poems late last year and they are now compiled into the book Before the Usual Time.

She says it contains poetry, prose and stories connected to the land and people demonstrating how community is always connected.

The book was released this week.

A gathering of new writers, such as Emma Petahtegoose (from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek), as well as more seasoned writers, such as David Groulx, Sherwin Bitsui and Joan Navlyuk Kane, offer a diverse insight into community.

From around Mother Earth, the Indigenous voices of emerging and practiced writers are in the following pages,” an excerpt from the introduction states. “We go deep into their communities, their visions, their creations, their experiences. Their words are open, full of courage, strength, beauty, sadness and wild creativity. Poetry, prose, stories that allow the reader to know the fire never went out, community is alive, connected to the land and the people.”

Contributors include Sherwin Bitsui, David Groulx, Craig Santos Perez, Chuquai Billy, Sy Hoahwah, Petahtegoose, Emily Clarke, Leanna Marshall, Dennis Saddleman, Craig Commanda, Naponse, Ardelle Sagutcheway, Jessie Fiddler, Joan Naviyuk Kane, Cathy Smith, Lori Flinders and Ajuawak Kapashesit.

Books can be purchased through latitude46publishing.com, Indigo.ca and local booksellers.
