Daughters of the Vote

A unique opportunity to experience the House of Commons and the workings of Parliament was provided to young women from across Canada as part of the Daughters of the Vote proram.

Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP, Carol Hughes, says this year’s participant is Aurora Ominika-Enosse of Wiikwemikoong Unceded First Nation.

Hughes says 338 young women were participants in the Daughters of the Vote, which took place in the House of Commons Wednesday.

She adds it provided the young women with an opportunity to discuss issues that are important to them and the role politics can play in their lives.

Every year, young women from all the ridings can apply to be part of the program.

It was a pleasure to meet up with over lunch with the other Speakers’ in the House and their respective participants to discuss their view of politics and world issues, as well as their aspirations.

It was a historical moment for this particular group of participants given the current political climate and it was evident that Aurora and many other young women in this program are quite dissatisfied with policies and actions of some of the political parties, as we saw her and many others who walked out during the Conservative Leader’s speech and turned their backs to the Prime Minister during his speech.

This was a fantastic opportunity for Aurora and no doubt given the questions asked to the Prime Minister by the participants, our future is in good hands with these young women who are already leading the way in building momentum for their political engagement and advocacy on so many fronts.
