Remembering Grandmother Josephine Mandamin

A well-known Elder and Water Walker will begin her walk to the Spirit World today.
Grandmother Josephine Mandamin, will be remembered today by First Nations across the country.

Grandmother Mandamin walked more than 17,000 kilometers around the Great Lakes and advocated for their protection emphasizing water is sacred.
The founder of the Mother Earth Water Walk in 2003, she was presented with the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conversation in 2016.
She also played a key role is establishing the Great Lakes Protection Act during her time as Chief Commissioner of the Anishinabek Nation Women’s Water Commission.
The ceremonial service to honour her will be held today (Monday) at 10:00 am at Pontiac School in her home community of Wiikwemikoong.
She was 77.
