Lake Huron has thousands of new fry, thanks to students at Shawanosowe School in Birch Island.

Teacher, Rick Legrow says students were excited to be out of the classroom and taking part in a fish-planting program in the Whitefish River First Nation area on Wednesday.

He says around 15,0000 Brook Trout fry and eggs were released into the Great Lake by students from Grade three to Grade six.

Legrow says Rolly Frappier and Micro-Hatcheries Incorporated for assisting the school with the project.

Chief Frank Paibomsai also helped out and says the importance of land-based learning can’t be over-emphasized with students getting hands on and real exposto the living environment. He adds this is the third year of a long-term learning program for the school.
