Inquest underway set for Lake Wanapitei and Ottawa deaths – 911

A joint inquest ordered by Ontario Chief Coroner, Dr. Dirk Huyer, in the deaths of three people on Lake Wanapitei and an Ottawa area woman is underway.

Matthew Robert Humeniuk, Michael Isaac Kritz and Stephanie Joelle Bertrand all died in Sudbury following a boating incident on Lake Wanapitei on June 30, 2013.

Fifty-four-year-old Kathryn Missen died on September 3rd, 2014 in Casselman, as the result of a medical condition.

Missen passed away even though her family immediately called 911 and she lived near to emergency responders, who failed to arrive.

And, in the Sudbury accident, lone survivor Rob Dorzek called 911 after the boat crash and was on the phone for an hour as the 911 dispatcher struggled to determine his location even though it had been pinpointed through GPS.

Dr. Huyer says the inquest will examine the events surrounding each of these deaths and provide an opportunity to improve 911 and the coordination of emergency responders.

The Sudbury inquest started on Monday and the Missen inquest will be held in Ottawa October 22nd.
