Elliot Lake – replacement volunteering to fill vacant seat

Elliot Lake Councillor Connie Nykyforak was the third councillor to resign their seat in the last seven months and a replacement has already volunteered.

Nykyforak resigned her seat last Thursday and several attempts to contact her for comment were unsuccessful.

The resignation comes after council, in a closed meeting, stripped Nykyforak of all her positions on city boards and committees.

The city has the option to call a by-election or appoint someone until the October municipal election.
Council has until the March 26th council meeting to declare the seat vacant.

However, Mayor Dan Marchisella has indicated a candidate with previous council experience has already said she is willing to serve, but who will not be revealed until after the meeting.

Nykyforak’s resignation is the third following resignations In September by councillors Scot Reinhart and Candace Martin.

All three councillors were the subject of two investigations carried out by the city’s integrity commissioner, Robert Swayze indicating the three had overstepped their bounds as stipulated in the councillor code of conduct.
