LIONS AND OTHER GROUPS MELD FOR CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE …

When does a tradition become a tradition? Is it the same as a habit? Is there a time frame involved? If an action or event has been repeated for two years, does that qualify as a tradition or is it the “second annual”?
I think most people would agree that a tradition has to be positive or even honourable. A bad habit cannot be a tradition! Traditions stick around for a long time. Thankfully fads do not!
There are many traditions at this time of year: presents, Christmas trees, stars, decorations, wreaths, lights…the list is endless. In Espanola, we have wonderful events at this time of year which could be called traditions: the Christmas Cantata, the Christmas parade, Lions telethon, the Lions Christmas party with Santa, and my favourite, the Espanola Lions annual toy drive.
Every year the town comes together to donate toys so that hundreds of local kids can have a merrier Christmas. And the tradition continues!!!
So many local businesses and groups are part of this. Pick an angel from the Angel Tree at Tanner’s .buy a gift and return it to the bin. When you check out at the Hart Store at the Mall, you can select and purchase a toy and receive a $5.00 gift certificate. Giant Tiger will have a bin for toy donations also. There will be a beautiful tree in the lobby at the Legion just waiting for gifts underneath it. Look for the “Agnes Michon Lions Toy Drive “ signs. And you can “Tip a Teller” at the T.D.Bank. The club collects thousands of toys every year; wraps them and delivers them to make Christmas a happier event.
Speaking of wrapping gifts!!! If you would like to help out, please bring scissors, a friend and wrapping skills to the Upstairs room at the Legion on Thursday, December 15th at10:00 a.m.For all you knitters out there, please call 869-5798 if you would like your hats, scarves, mitts or gloves picked up. Stay tuned for the date and location of the annual Teddy Bear Toss, always a fun event. After all, every kid needs a Teddy at Christmas!
And don’t forget the CTV Lions Christmas Telethon! These traditions make our community a kinder, happier, and better place for all.
