Maple Gate hosts public meeting on men’s shelter

A women’s shelter in Elliot Lake held a public meeting to talk about the opening of a transition house for women and a men’s shelter.

On Monday, community members were able to express concerns about adding a transition shelter as well as a new men’s shelter through Maple Gate House for Women.

The Something More Project hopes for a winter opening for those who are need.

Right now, there isn’t a men’s shelter available for men displaced between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie and need housing.

The project consists of two houses, purchased by Maple Gate with support from the Algoma District Services Administration Board, one being a transition house for women on Lawrence Avenue and the other, a men’s shelter on Mississauga Avenue.
The men’s shelter will be run by Maple Gate and the organization has applied to the city for zoning on the two houses, which will be brought before council next month.
