Vale strike continues – talks resume today https://www.myespanolanow.com/42536/news/vale-strike-continues-talks-resume-today/ Mon, 19 Jul 2021 10:07:23 +0000 https://www.myespanolanow.com/?p=42536

The two sides involved in the Vale strike hope a third party will be the magic charm in reaching a deal and ending a strike, which is entering its eighth week.

Vale spokesperson Danica Pagnutti says over the past week or so, Vale and United Steelworkers Local 6500 in Sudbury agreed to return to the bargaining table, but this time around with a third-party facilitator.

Pagnutti says the two sides remain hopeful that with the facilitator in place, a collective agreement can be reached soon.

Some 2,500 workers have been on strike since June 1st with the key issues being health benefits, especially for new workers and compensation when the market is good.

Forest fire smoke and your health https://www.myespanolanow.com/42538/news/forest-fire-smoke-and-your-health/ Mon, 19 Jul 2021 01:39:01 +0000 https://www.myespanolanow.com/?p=42538

With active forest fires in northwestern Ontario and eastern Manitoba, Environment Canada has issued special air quality statements for northern Ontario, including the Algoma District.

Nicole Lindahl with Algoma Public Health says smoke plumes from these active fires may result in deteriorated air quality across the region clearing up sometime late Monday night.

She cautions residents of the Algoma district that air pollution from wildfire smoke can be harmful to health and aggravate heart or lung conditions.

Lindahl adds common, mild symptoms of smoke exposure include sore and watery eyes, runny nose, scratchy throat, mild coughing, or headache, but those at higher risk may have more serious symptoms, like shortness of breath, severe wheezing or coughing, chest pain, or heart palpitations.

She encourages anyone with severe symptoms to seek prompt medical care.
