Laurentian University confirms there was a limited data breach after a cyber incident in February.
Officials with the school say the data theft affects some individuals associated with the Living with Lakes Centre / Co-operative Freshwater Ecology Unit and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, including employees, students and more.
While an investigation to see what exactly was exposed will take months, Laurentian says they'll provide a no-cost two-year credit monitoring service to all those who are affected. That information will come from the school via e-mail.
They also ask any undergraduate medical student and postgraduate resident of NOSM (naw-SUM) who entered the program from 2005 to 2019 to contact them.
Officials say if you believe you are part of the affected groups listed above, you can email them at privacyinquiries@laurentian.ca or call 705-675-1151 x 90100 as a dedicated phone line will be set-up by Monday, March 11, 2024.

Domtar to indefinitely idle Espanola Mill https://www.myespanolanow.com/54588/featured/domtar-to-indefinitely-idle-espanola-mill/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 16:10:20 +0000 https://www.myespanolanow.com/?p=54588

Domtar Corporation has announced today that it will indefinitely idle the pulp and paper operations at its Espanola facility for an expected period greater than one year.

Officials say the announcement will affect approximately 450 employees.

"The Espanola mill has been challenged for some time now," said Steve Henry, Domtar paper and packaging president. "We have worked diligently to find a viable path forward for the operation, including offering it for sale. Employees affected by this change have earned our appreciation and we thank them for their contributions. We also want to thank federal and provincial officials for their efforts."

Officials say the mill will be idled after "years of ongoing losses and high costs associated with maintaining and operating the facility", adding the pulp mill will shut down in early October and the paper machines will shut down in early November.

In a release, the company shared it will take appropriate measures to assist employees affected by the decision in accordance with the collective agreement, Domtar policy and legislation.

"The mill will be idled in a safe and environmentally sound manner that will facilitate a possible sale or future restart," it reads.

Domtar Corporation is a part of the Paper Excellence Group.

East Algoma OPP investigating a cruelty to animals incident https://www.myespanolanow.com/54504/featured/east-algoma-opp-investigating-a-cruelty-to-animals-incident/ Tue, 29 Aug 2023 17:02:09 +0000 https://www.myespanolanow.com/?p=54504

A warning to our readers. The following story deals with subject matter that may be disturbing to some.

East Algoma OPP is investigating a cruelty to animals incident and is looking to the public for help.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Aug. 28, officers responded to the incident in the Iron Bridge area, in the Municipality of Huron Shores.

Officials say on a side road off Red Rock Damn Road, officers located a large metal cage covered with what appeared to be a white and green pool filter and a grey canvas tarp.

Under the tarp were carcasses of black and brown dogs, adding it was difficult to determine the number of puppies due to "severe deterioration" of the animals.

Police say no food or water bowls were inside the cage, suggesting the puppies were left to suffer and die. Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP or Crime Stoppers.
