Temiskaming OPP Crime Unit returned nearly a million dollars to two local corporations after a lengthy fraud investigation.
OPP Constable Chris Hawkins says on February 23rd, their OPP crime unit started a fraud investigation after receiving complaints from two local corporations who fell victim to spear phishing scams.
Upon further investigation, multiple warrants were executed and as a result, he adds over $950,000 was returned.
He emphasizes businesses to keep an eye out for warning signs of a spear phishing scam like strange emails or links that are odd or of unusual urgency.
He adds limit the information you share publicly on social media profiles and keep security systems updated.
