The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has played a role in the reintroduction of a program at Cambrian College.
Business and I. T. Dean, Brian Lobban says starting this May, Cambrian will be offering a two-year diploma program in Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Management.
He says it is the first time since 2012 that the program has been available at the main campus and with its reintroduction, Cambrian also becomes the only college in Northern Ontario to offer the program.
The hospitality sector has been especially hard-hit since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,” explains Lobban, and the program will help rebuild the hospitality workforce that was devastated by the health crisis.
He adds students will also be required to complete a mandatory placement in industry in their final semester.
Courses to be taught in the program include Beverages and Mixology, Food and Nutrition Theory, Rooms Division Theory, Banquet and Catering Management, Accounting, Gaming and Casinos, Facility Management, Hospitality Law and Risk Management and Marketing.
The Ontario Government’s Labour Market Outlook 2021-25 is predicting above-average job prospects for the hotel and restaurant management sector, explains Cambrian Vice-President, Dr. Paula Gouveia.
“The re-introduction of Hotel and Restaurant Management reflects our ongoing commitment to address the needs of the marketplace,” says Dr. Gouveia, adding the college wants to support economic recovery in the hospitality sector, by working with industry partners in the community and beyond to ensure they are getting the skilled workers they need now and in the future.
