Habitat for Humanity expands in Algoma district

Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie is expanding to serve the entire Algoma District including Elliot Lake, Blind River and communities outside of Sault Ste Marie.

Habitat board chair Frank Bentrovato says the organization is looking for volunteers in communities around the region, and they’re exploring opportunities for ReStore locations as well.

He says the non-profit has recognized that there is a need for affordable housing across all of Algoma, adding compared to Sault Ste. Marie, households in the district have a lower average income, spend more of their income on shelter, and have more households in need of major repairs.

Bentrovato adds since the pandemic began, they have seen an increase in applications, so the expansion is warranted, and they will now begin the process of finding suitable locations and supporting businesses throughout the district.

The focus will be on ReStore projects initially, then expand to new builds.
