Two-spirit and LGBTQ+ symposium being held virtually

The Second Annual Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ symposium is being hosted by the Metis Nation of Ontario.

MNO spokesperson Victoria Belton says tomorrow their Two-Spirit Working Group is hosting the virtual gathering, which aims to create safe spaces for queer-identifying Métis citizens to share and learn from one another’s experiences and advance positive change.

She says the theme ‘A Place in the Circle’ will be the focus during the all-day presentation.

Belton adds attendees will hear from a community panel and several speakers.

The symposium will cover important issues like Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ Erasure and Resurgence, personal journeys, how culture keeps community strong and Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ roles within Métis communities. There will also be a cultural activity of Two-Spirit tobacco teachings and medicine bag making, led by Benny Michaud, (she/they/he) a proud ayahwkew (Two-Spirit), Eagle Clan, Michif Person.

A member of the MNO Two-Spirit Working Group, Benny can speak to the importance of this Symposium and the Métis community’s efforts to advance Two-Spirit & LGBTQ+ rights and belonging. Please let me know if you’d like an interview with Benny.

The MNO has long recognized that 2SLGBTQ+ identifying Métis peoples play an integral role in society, bringing unique insight and perspective to the wider community. MNO President Margaret Froh is also a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and works tirelessly as a mental health and wellbeing advocate, especially for Two-Spirit & LGBTQ+ youth.
