Nairn & Hyman Township Mayor resigns over COVID vaccination policy

Nairn & Hyman Township will be looking at options in filling a vacancy left by the resignation of their mayor.

Mayor Laurier Falldien, who has filled the position for the last 11 years, submitted his resignation this Monday over his concerns about COVID19 and the vaccination policies.

In his letter to council, he states he has been overwhelmed by stress having to close his business for seven months due to the shutdowns.

He says the second important reason is that it looks like council will mandate vaccinations for municipal staff, a position he vehemently opposes.

He wishes his fellow councillors well and thanks the people of the community for their support over the last 11 years.

Council will declare the position vacant at its next meeting and then will discuss options to fill it.

Options include holding a by-election, naming a member of the council as acting mayor, or advertising to fill the position.

The next meeting is slated for December 13th.
