Wiikwemkoong’s long-time chief has announced he has taken an official leave of absence to run in the federal election.
Duke Peltier, who has served as chief for the last 15 years, will be the Liberal candidate for the Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing riding.
Peltier says he decided to run because it is an excellent opportunity to voice First Nation concerns and perspectives and fight for justice at the federal level.
With his leave, Councillor Tim Ominika has been named as Acting Chief until September 27th.
Other candidates running in the riding include NDP incumbent Carol Hughes and Conservative John Sagman.
