SIU investigating women’s fatal fall from Sudbury bridge

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 53-year-old woman in Sudbury.

The unit says shortly after 5:00 pm on Friday, several people called 911 to report a woman who appeared to be in distress on the Bridge of Nations in downtown Sudbury.

Local officers from Greater Sudbury Police were able to talk to her, but around 5:45, the women fell from the bridge to the railway bed below.

She was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased.

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact their office.

No further information will be released until the unit completes its investigation.

The SIU information line is 1-800-787-8529.

The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to the incident to upload that video through the SIU website https://www.siu.on.ca/siu-investigating-after-woman-fatally-falls-from-bridge-in-sudbury-en6471

In another unconnected incident, last night Greater Sudbury Police were successful in talking down a 26-year-old man in emotional distress on the same bridge.

The bridge was closed for approximately two hours while the team talked to the man.

Police say he was brought to the hospital to receive the treatment he requires.
