Elliot Lake council approves broadband expansion

Elliot Lake council has given the go-ahead to fund the local portion of a $660-thousand-dollar upgrade of broadband services.

City I.T. director Robin Scott says the federal funding would provide more than half-a-million-dollars for the upgrade while the local portion would be about $165,000.

She emphasizes the wireless improvements would involve adding a few towers and some equipment upgrades but would provide broadband services to waterfront properties.

The city wants to add and improve to the existing system already in place.

The city is also studying local broadband needs to see if the municipality qualifies for additional funding.
