M.S. Norgoma sold – returning home to Tobermory

Before the Chi Cheemaun, there was the M.S. Norgoma, which will once again find a new home.

Originally constructed as a steam-powered ship in 1950, she was converted to a motor ship and provided ferry services between Tobermory and South Baymouth starting in 1964.

She was replaced by the Chi- Cheemaun in 1974 and was berthed in Sault Ste. Marie as a museum ship by the St. Mary’s River Marine Heritage Centre.

Last September, the City said repossessed the ship and put her up for sale.

At its meeting last night, Sault council agreed to sell the ship for $2,500 to Tobermory Real Estate Investors Incorporated, which is now working on finding a permanent berth for the historic vessel in Tobermory.

The company will also pay rental and relocation costs for the ship and are cautiously optimistic they will find a berth for the ship by the end of this shipping season.
