Municipalities and First Nations are removing fire bans just in time for the Victoria Day long weekend.
The province is lifting the Restricted Fire Zone across Ontario’s fire region and the ban will be over at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 16th.
The Town of Espanola has lifted the fire ban, but permits are needed for brush burning and the public is asked to keep their fires small.
Elliot Lake is allowing open burning without permits but will have bylaw officers on the lookout for large gatherings, which are not permitted under COVID-19 protocols.
Blind River is allowing small fires in a proper pit but permits to burn brush during the day will only be available next Tuesday.
Sagamok-Anishnawbek First Nation has removed the ban, but anyone wishing to have open burning this weekend must contact the band office and pay $5 for a burn permit.
Nairn & Hyman Township is allowing fireworks now that the ban is lifted. The public can also burn leaves and brush, as well as have small fires in a proper setting.
Sables-Spanish Rivers Township is allowing fireworks and small backyard fires, but no permits will be issued for burning brush until next Tuesday.
Manitoulin Island communities have also lifted their bans, but are only allowing small campfires. Most require a permit to burn brush and fireworks are not allowed.
First Nations across Manitoulin are also lifting the bans as of midnight tonight, but no brush burning is allowed. Permits will be available on Tuesday.
