Day of Mourning – Elliot Lake and Espanola

Flags were lowered to half-mast and wreaths laid as part of the annual Day of Mourning.

A small group of Domtar workers in Espanola met at the memorial yesterday morning to lay wreaths and hold a minute of silence in remembrance of workers who died or were injured on the job.

Company human resources manager Teresa Miller says it’s not only a day to remember and honour those lives lost or injured due to a workplace tragedy, but also a day to renew the commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses and deaths.

Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella and Councillor Ed Pearce also laid a wreath at the Miner’s Memorial. Marchisella says flying the flags at half-mast and remembering those who have died or been injured is a respectful way for everyone to make sure workplaces are safe and workers protected.
