The CORONAVIRUS REPORT for MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2020

IN ONTARIO

Ontario reported 437 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total to 14-thousand, 432 so far.

That daily increase, 3.1 percent, is the lowest in several weeks.

Of the total number of cases, about eight-thousand are now considered resolved.

There have been 835 deaths recorded, an increase of 24.

Three-quarters of those deaths, more than 600, have occurred on in long-term care facilities.

Provincial officials report outbreaks in at least 147 long-term care homes across Ontario.

ACROSS CANADA:

Across Canada, there are almost 47-thousand cases of the coronavirus, with almost 28-hundred deaths reported.

But with the curve starting to flatten, more provinces are set to announce plans to loosen restrictions.

Premier Doug Ford is expected to outline his government’s proposals this week, as will the Quebec government.

Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick announced tentative timelines for a gradual return to normal life last week.

Over the weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says it’s too soon to talk about “immunity passports” for Canadians who’ve recovered from COVID-19, because scientists still don’t know if they have gained any immunity.

A federal task force has been set up to investigate how peoples’ immune systems have responded to the virus.

AROUND THE WORLD:

Worldwide, several more countries are beginning to ease their restrictions on business and movement.

Children in hard-hit Spain are being allowed outside for the first time in more than six weeks, under strict physical distancing rules.

Italy plans to reopen parks, wholesale stores, and restaurants on May 4th, while New York State plans to allow some manufacturing and construction work to resume in mid-May, if the number of hospitalizations continues to decline.

To this point, there have been around three-million cases of COVID-19 around the world, with almost 207-thousand deaths.
