Sables-Spanish Rivers Township creating a new farming class – building permits

Sables-Spanish Rivers Township council is expected to give final approval to a new class in the Building Code focusing on farming properties.

Farmers Charlie Smith and John Mooney both appeared before council to express their concerns about what they call unfair permits charges for building structures such as barns.

Mooney was being charged $11,000 in building permit fees to build a new barn.

Mayor Leslie Gamble says the township is proposing farm buildings be assessed in a separate class; $10 per square foot for farm buildings with low human occupancy; $15 and $20 per square foot for commercial structures.

Gamble feels there is a bit more fine-tuning to be done before the proposed fees become law, so the matter will once again come before council later this month before the bylaw is passed.
