Espanola Awarded Funding for a Commuter Cycle Plan

The Town of Espanola was successful in applying for a grant to the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling program fund that was announced this summer by the Minister of Transportation.

It is part of the Province’s Climate Change Action Plan 2016-2020 initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Ontario.

Espanola EDO and program manager, Cheryl Kennelly, says the grant of $25,000 will go towards the development of a commuter cycle plan.

She says the funding is designated to create a plan to lay down the framework to develop an active transportation network and improve cycling infrastructure and signage, the identification of trails and increase cycling amenities.

Espanola is now part of the designated Lake Huron North Channel Waterfront Trail system.

Next year, it will also be a part of the new Georgian Bay Cycling Route connecting the system to Manitoulin and the Bruce Peninsula.
