First Nation communities calling for better road safety following a fatal crash near Sault Ste Marie

Last Friday’s fatal highway collision near Sault Ste. Marie has First Nations calling for better safety measures. A Bruce Mines man and woman died when their vehicle was hit by a tractor trailer passing through the Garden River First Nation. Although the victims were not from Garden River, 35 residents of the Aboriginal community have been killed in collisions on the reserve over the past 30 years.

Highway 17 now bypasses Garden River but some motorists still use the old highway going through the reserve. Ontario chiefs say what places like Garden River need are speed limits and school zone signs to improve safety.
