Do your kids ever wonder where you go during the day while they are off to school?
Rainbow District school’s grade nine students will find out next week when they shadow a parent or friend as part of the National Take Our Kids to Work Program.
Education Director Bob Bourget says the day encourages students to make connections between the classroom and the world of work reinforcing the importance of obtaining a secondary school diploma.
He adds local employers also have an important role to play in preparing their future workplace with the day providing a catalyst to engage students in career discussions with role models in different settings.
Bourget adds the students will be out in the workplace next Wednesday, November 5th.
Now in its 31st year, the Take Our Kids to Work program has engaged over 200,000 students and 75,000 businesses across the country.
The Learning Partnership began the program in Ontario in 1994 and has since expanded to reach students in all provinces and territories.
The Student Commission of Canada, a charitable organization that works to empower young people, their peers and communities, now facilitates the program.
Students can obtain information about Take Our Kids to Work at area Rainbow secondary schools. Parents/guardians of participating students will be required to complete and sign a consent form. Parents/guardians should check with employers about any age restrictions for placement.
Employers are encouraged to identify information that students will need to know in advance to ensure a safe workplace visit.
All Grade 9 students will receive Workplace Health and Safety Awareness training in preparation for their day in the world of work.
