Elliot Lake Fire Services is bringing back its annual Christmas Food Drive.
William Elliott, President of the Fire Fighters Association, along with Len Kutchaw, chair of the ELEFB, are inviting community members to help with the initiative.
Elliot says the 35th annual drive will take place on December 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
He says the event returns after a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019.
Kutchaw adds firefighters and volunteers will be going door to door throughout the city, gathering non-perishable food items to benefit the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank.
He says in the past, the food drive has achieved success with the last event bringing in over $40,000 worth of food, based on current market weight prices.
This year, the goal is to match that success, and organizers plan to mobilize over 100 volunteers, including drivers and route walkers along the 20 routes that have been mapped out in the city.
“We’ll have 20 routes, with each team made up of five local volunteers collecting non-perishable food and hygiene products to support families in need,” Elliott explains.
Both stress the need for early volunteer registration.
“We need to spread the word now so we can plan the routes and assign people accordingly,” Kutchaw adds.
The call for volunteers is open to everyone in the community, including students looking to fulfill volunteer requirements, seniors, and families wanting to participate in a meaningful activity together.
