The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service launched its School Liaison Officer Program this August working with the community’s three schools.
Police Chief Ron Gignac says his officers and staff are passionate about making a difference to young people in the community where they not only are policing, but mentoring, educating and inspiring youth.
He says under the program, one officer from each platoon serves as the main point of contact for
the schools each day, with a secondary officer available as backup.
He says the officers also play sports, read to primary grades, but also discuss topics such as drug resistance, internet safety and cyber bullying.
Gignac adds with that success, next year they will be expanding the program with the addition of a full-time School Liaison Coordinator who will support platoon officers and the launch of the Drug Awareness Resistance Education (DARE) program in schools next fall providing another educational layer focused on youth safety and resilience.
