Espanola’s Northern Credit Union branch is joining their peers worldwide today to mark International Credit Union Day with donations to local food banks including those in Espanola, Massey, and Nairn.
Co-CEO’s, Richard Adam and Dennis Alvestad, say too many families in northern Ontario struggle to put food on the table despite working hard and they are proud to invest in local organizations addressing food insecurity.
Today (Oct. 16), employees, and administration will be donating $10,000 to organizations working to reduce food insecurity in Ontario at its local branches.
WEB: Approximately one in four households in the region lacks reliable access to adequate food due to financial constraints.
In 2023, 30.7% of children under 18 in Ontario were living in food-insecure households.
This represents a 51% increase from 2021.
Food insecurity ranges from worrying about running out of food to being unable to afford
nutritious meals, eating less than needed, or going days without eating.
It both contributes to poor health and is often a result of it, creating a cycle.
