Considering the changes announced by the Government of Canada last week, Canada Post has 45 days to present a plan on how to move the postal system forward.
CEO, President Doug Ettinger has outlined the plan to update the system in a letter to Canadians.
He points out less than one in four Canadians still receive door-to-door delivery, with 77% of Canadian households already having their mail delivered to community mailboxes.
However, they understand some customers have accessibility challenges which is why they have the Delivery Accommodation Program.
He points out the list of rural post offices created 30 years ago has not been updated, so that will be an important part of the new plan, since many of those are now urbanized.
Ettinger emphasizes they will be looking at maintaining services for the communities that need it in rural, remote, Northern, and Indigenous communities.
He added with thousands of employees eligible to retire over the next five years, they will be able to minimize the impact on employees.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers hit the picket lines late last week after the government pushed for changes.
