More than 100 officers, families, and community members gathered in Mindemoya last weekend, on September 6, for the Fifth annual Tour de Force, a cycling event honouring fallen law enforcement officers and celebrating the late OPP Constable Marc Hovingh.
The event began as the Marc Hovingh Memorial Ride following his death in the line of duty in 2020 with proceeds supporting the Survivors of Law Enforcement (SOLE) and the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation.
Cyclists from local police services and the public chose from 30 km, 70 km, or 140 km routes, including OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.
This year also saw introduction of the Marc Hovingh Memorial Youth Bike Ride and Rodeo, organized by the OPP Youth Foundation with the assistance of local officers.
Executive Director Sandy Poredos announced a new annual $2,500 bursary for a Manitoulin Secondary School student who embodies Marc’s compassion and kindness — one of the school’s largest bursaries.
The Rodeo welcomed 45 youth, who took part in safety drills and bike skills training led by officers from Ontario Provincial Police – Northeast Region, UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service and WTPS.
Six new bicycles were donated to island youth.
Community services including paramedics and fire fighters also took part.
