Memorialization of former AB Ellis Public School underway

The transformation of the former A.B. Ellis Public School site is one step closer to completion.
According to the release, in addition to a soccer field, basketball court and parking lot, the space across from Espanola High School will soon be home to a community garden, with cedars, sage and sweetgrass also being planted on the grounds.
Embedded in the garden is the school’s former signage from 1919.
The area also features stone in the form of the medicine wheel as well as circular seating, making the space ideal as an outdoor classroom or for community events.
Designed with local input, the space combines Indigenous culture and community elements to create a meaningful and memorable experience for area students and residents.
The final stages of the project will be completed in the next few weeks.
There will also be a fire pit enclosure being built by the construction technology class at Espanola High School where a sacred fire can be lit for ceremonies.
Work is currently being carried out by Intercity Landscaping with a dedication ceremony planned for later this fall.
